Signs of a cooling system problem

  • Temperature gauge reading higher than normal
  • Steam from under the hood
  • Green, orange or pink fluid under the vehicle
  • A sweet smell after driving
  • The heater blows cold when the engine is warm
  • Low coolant with no visible leak

If the engine overheats

Pull over when it is safe and shut the engine off. Do not open the radiator or reservoir cap while the system is hot; the coolant is under pressure and can cause burns. Let the engine cool, and have the vehicle towed if the gauge climbs again.

How we find the cause

We pressure test the system and the cap, inspect hoses, the radiator, water pump and heater core, check fan operation and thermostat function, and test for combustion gases in the coolant when a head gasket is suspected.

Questions we hear often

What should I do if my car starts to overheat?

Turn off the A/C, pull over safely and shut off the engine. Do not remove the cap while hot. Call us before driving further.

Can I just add water?

In an emergency, water can get you to safety once the engine has cooled. The system should then be tested for leaks and refilled with the correct coolant mixture.

How often should coolant be changed?

Intervals vary widely by manufacturer and coolant type. We will check your vehicle's schedule and test the coolant's condition.

Why is my car losing coolant with no leak on the ground?

Coolant can leak onto hot parts and evaporate, leak into the cabin through the heater core, or be consumed internally. A pressure test helps find it.
